Preparing Images For Galleries

Gallery Information

All NCFPC members' images are welcome. Each member can contribute images for the following Galleries:

  • Event Galleries - Collections of images taken at events that would be of interest club members and general public
  • Member's Galleries - A collection of images representing the work of one member (limit of 30 images).
  • Competition Galleries - Any images submitted for monthly club competitions

Images for all of the above galleries should be prepared in the same way with the exception of one additional peice of data that needs to be added to images in the Competition galleries (see IPTC info below).

Over time, I hope members will contribute step-by-step galery prep tutorials for each of the software products available. Until that time, I will provide the following information to use as a guideline in preparing your files.

Image Size

Prepare your images as you normally would using the software of your choice. Then resize your image to be 600 pixels wide and 72dpi. You do not need to sharpen your resized image for the web.

These gallery pages are currently created using the HTML web page generator in BreezeBrowser (www.breezesys.com). This software will take whatever image you provide and will interpolate it to a maximum of 600 pixels by 600 pixels at 72dpi. So for a minimum of file degradation due to size interpolation, you should send files that are already this size.

I would strongly suggest that you add a watermark to your images indentifying your copyright such as "© Member Name 2008". This may not keep someone from downloading your image and using it in violation of your copyright, but would increase your ability to claim an award in the case of any litigation that you may bring against someone using your images without permission. There is virtually no way to totally secure images on the web from illegal use. It comes down to whether or not you want to publicly display your images and deal with any situations that may arise from doing so.

IPTC Information

The text information displayed in the galleries indicating the image name, your name, etc. needs to come from your files. This is done by embedding IPTC information in your file. Most likely the program you are using to prepare you image has this capability. The following table shows the data needed in the file and the IPTC field that contains that data:

Other management software will have similarly named fields. Use a little common sense and you can probably figure it out. If not send me an email and we can work on it.

File Naming:

Each image file name must include the first 4 letters of your Last Name plus a two digit sequence, the title of the photo and the file extension.

Example: John Smith submits 2 files, "Bird of Paradise", and "The Child", in a JPG format. He would name them as follows:

  • SMIT01-Bird of Paradise.JPG
  • SMIT02-The Child.JPG
